I’m an avid reader of self help books. I love to get inspired and then make some changes to my life. Each day of my life I try to grow in one area. Self help books give me ideas of new ways to keep myself in constant growth “Mike Paget says”.

About self help Mike Paget says that Self help books have the potential to create positive change in people’s lives. There are so many people in this world, ordinary everyday people doing the best they can in their lives, who don’t yet know that things could be different, that their lives could be better, that they could feel better. Self Help books contain many ideas, philosophies and suggestions that may open the door to a new way of thinking, behaving or looking at life for people who are feeling lost, burdened, sad, stressed, overweight or struggling with any number of life’s challenges. There is no need to continue to struggle with things in your life. Somewhere out there some answers and hope can be found if you will only take the time to look for it. While it would be wonderful to be able to wave a magic wand and make all things just the way you want them unfortunately that’s not the way things are in this world in which we live. It is up to you to reach out or ask for the help you need whether that be by going for therapy, talking with a friend or reading a Self Help book.

Public Speaking As a Tool For Controlling the Masses

By Zander Smiths

Those among us who learn and perfect the art of public speaking attain the means and the power to control and even suppress the rest of us.

This world is run by those who can express themselves better and convince his or her fellows that he or she has their interest at heart. If the masses listen and perceive that you understand and express their concern in a way they understand, they place the responsibility of determining their lives entirely on your hands. That is why the finest orators in our society are always leaders of different causes.

Essentially, public speaking is a process of speaking to a group using a creatively structured speech, a deliberate style and manner intended to subjectively inform on matters important to the speaker. If a public speaker can convince, interest and entertain the listeners in a way that influences their convictions and consequent decisions, that is successful public speaking.

Results of a public speech are always gauged by its influence on listeners and how effectively it coerces them to assume a particular course of action or behavior. Simply put, the essence of public speaking rests in controlling the behavior, beliefs and actions of the masses. Most leaders are voted into offices because their speeches best- expressed a message that resonated with the wishes of the masses.

Let’s get practical. The immediate former US president, George W. Bush, was voted back to the office because he successfully convinced the American voting public that the priority concern of their nation was to successfully wage an anti-terrorism campaign. When John McCain a fellow republican used an almost similar platform in the last general election, he lost. In fact, Obama is now the president because he successfully convinced the same voting public that war and vengeance was outdated and that America needed to spearhead peace initiatives even with known terrorist-harboring nations.

Overcoming Public Speaking Stress

By Sean Kenaston

For most of us, public speaking is a common source of stress and nervousness. Many people may never overcome their fear of public speaking, which can have a negative impact on their careers and overall success in life. It’s an unfortunate reality that if we wish to succeed in our professional and personal life, we will be forced to speak in front of a number of people at some time or another.

Public speaking does not need to be so hard and stressful. If you put in a bit of effort and learn its secrets, it is very possible to overcome the stress of public speaking.

Speaking in front of large gatherings doesn’t need to be too stressful, difficult, and demanding; clear your mind of this negative opinion. Every great speaker started as a novice. It was through intense effort and dedication that they turned out to be the best in the business. With the same kind of commitment, you can be just like them.

To succeed in public speaking, you do not need to be the most brilliant person on the planet. You just need to give it an honest effort. Your audience doesn’t expect you to be a master of all things known to mankind; all they want from you is dedication and determination. You’re there to present some relevant information in a way that’s easy for the audience to understand. They’re not expecting a brilliant and polished speech.

It is important to assert yourself. You want your audience to know that you understand what you’re talking about. If you feel a bit nervous and jittery when you first stand up in front of your audience, don’t worry! It is quite common and natural. All speakers feel that way, even the best! Just take a deep breath and try to relax. Try to establish eye-contact with your audience. Wait until you’re ready. Once you’ve achieved this, you’ll be well on your way to a powerful speech.

A lot of the stress of public speaking is caused by the feeling that you won’t be able to perform well when the time comes. To prepare for this, start practicing various speaking techniques in front of small groups of people during your daily routine. Tell a joke or story to a group of friends. You can even practice your speaking when talking to a sales clerk when you’re out shopping. After a while, you’ll begin to feel more confident speaking to larger and larger groups of people.

Is There Such Thing As Too Much Self-Help?

By Maryanne Comaroto

What a flipping fantastic question! When I was 33 years old I asked myself that very same question!! My library at the time brimmed with enough self-esteem-building, spirit-lifting, relationship-advising, co-dependent, neurotic, feminist, esoteric, astrological, paleontological, philosophical paradigms and relief to diagnose and heal several galaxies. From the esoteric: psychics, tarot readers, trance channels, holographic re-patterning specialists, aura color healers, palm readers, Reiki masters, past-life regression experts of the Far East Dharma, Karma, Buddha masters. I included the New Age, the poets and even the dead: Kierkegaard, Swedenborg, Kant, Borges. And I didn’t stop there: I devoured books on sex, business, the inner workings of the mind and ecstatic dance. If it was nonfiction and said “help” ANYWHERE in or on the book, I READ IT! I was on a path (with frequent intermissions) to find out EXACTLY how to be free and NOT suffer unless absolutely necessary. And even then was convinced I could find a way to diminish the likelihood of that. Yet, despite my drive in my particular quest to find immunity from pain, this form of my quest came to an abrupt halt at 33. I had crossed a line.

And funnily enough, just prior to that I had asked myself-or rather, I heard that still small voice that I hear and know as the Great Divine (sort of as if The Great Oz was God) inside of me say…and I swear it cleared its throat (okay, maybe not, but I like to think my inner guidance system has a tremendous sense of humor) “Maryanne…dear. Can it be, after so many years of relentless pursuit of the internal fortress you seek, that the answer does not lie somewhere in even one of these books?”

I was actually embarrassed, because for the first time I realized how profound the notion was. When you come down to it, awakening and staying awake is not a new concept. Yes, we are complicated beings, but many great people have devoted their lives to taking on the complex material of spiritual laws and have done a really tremendous job of breaking it down for us. Yet there I was, face-to-face with a question that led me across the abyss of awareness to transformation. It was time, at last, to take all “I knew” and actually create a practice. You see, I had become addicted to the buzz. A self-help junkie. And why not? I am pretty sure that of all my addictions this one actually paid off! But like all things the time had come for me to fish or cut bait. Change or die-well, I wanted to die, anyway.

Despite all this amazing information, I stood and looked at my life and could not figure out why, despite knowing “it all,” I was still suffering. Still in an unhealthy, unfulfilling relationship; still exercising poor choices, maintaining inappropriate boundaries, religiously entertaining recurrent negative self-talk, etc. And I knew it. This, my friends, was painful. They say ignorance is bliss. I said, after a 17-year quest to, in essence, wake up, I instead was faced with (in great detail) precisely what was wrong with me, simultaneously knowing better. Reminds me of a great line from a poem: “The fish in the water that is thirsty needs serious professional counseling.” Kabir

And then I woke up! Yup. Just like that. For me it took what it took, and, like all of us on a path, it takes what it takes. So could it be that had I read one book fewer I would have had my awakening, being delivered from suffering? Would I not have found that which I had sought my entire life? I can never know, it seems. What I do know is that I am often asked this question, I say to anyone that walks through my door or asks my advice on the matter: “What do you want? And what are you willing to do about it?” The answer for me was simple. I wanted true freedom of being and freedom from suffering. I said a prayer. “God, please show me the way!” And I woke up. But not before I had spent almost twenty years trying everything else! And what I was willing to do about it? The answer was equally as simple; whatever it took! Staying awake for me, is what I had sought my whole adult life, And to stay awake included, among other things, developing a daily practice that fostered this gift I had received.

Five Teen Job Search Tips

By Jennifer Peek

How is your teen job search going? There may be “Help Wanted” signs everywhere you look – or not. Even if you apply at every place that has a sign out, you may not be getting an interview or getting hired. Plus, you want a job that is best for you – and best for the employer. What do you need to consider to find that job? Check out these tips for a teen job search.

Figure out what type of job would be best for you. Do you want to be in an busy environment talking to customers continually? Or would you rather be in a job where you only interact with your co-workers? What about a blend of both? For instance, you might like being around people but not talking to them about which clothes to buy or taking their order. A good mix might be working as a bagger at a grocery store where you can interact with lots of customers but in a very limited way.

Determine how flexible your schedule really is. If you already have multiple commitments throughout the week or on weekends, this may make it difficult for some employers. On the other hand, some employers only need limited help and you could be the perfect match. One key thing is to make sure you do not overcommit at the beginning. If this is your first job, you need to get used to juggling a whole new responsibility along with your other ones. Once you get a handle on how it all works together, you can ask for more hours.

Make sure you have reliable transportation if you need it. It may go without saying but if you cannot drive, your job search will be more limited. It is not a good idea to apply for jobs that you will need to drive to and hope that you can make it work out. Get your parents to agree to drive you or figure out how to take public transportation to get there before you commit to a job.

Get creative in your search. Everyone, adults included, can get stuck on wanting to get their perfect job right from the start. You get it in your head that you must work at your favorite clothing store. And then you don’t get hired. So what. Start over and keep looking at other employers. This job is likely not permanent. Balance that with what you want to do and the scheduling to find a solid job that will give you experience (and earn some money too). You may find that this extra experience is what you
need to land that job you wanted originally.

Be consistent. It can be discouraging and disheartening to want to work and not be able to find anything. In addition to getting creative, you also need to be consistent. Follow up on any applications you’ve submitted either by phone or in person. If you go in person, try to do it when the manager is there and go dressed to interview. One young man I know wanted a particular sales job. He kept his clothes in his car, changed after working his other job and appeared at the manager’s office regularly saying that he was ready to go to work. It took awhile but he got the job – and went on to be one of the best in the office.
